When The Scouts launched a new provision for four to six year olds called Squirrels to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most, we jumped to find some volunteers.

After completing some training, we ran a trial in October 2022 to great success, so we officially opened our first Squirrel Drey in November! They’ve already had lots of fun and laughter with outdoors activities, games, badges and so much more! Some highlights are making dens, tasting food from around the world and visiting the local fire station!

The Squirrels are a wonderful addition to the group, it’s not just the little red tables and chairs that are new! They’ve already represented us at events including laying the wreath at Remembrance Parade and participating in St George’s Day celebrations (he’s our Patron of Scouting).

Although our eldest Squirrels have only been there eight months, all six worked hard and achieved their Chief Scout Acorn Award, the highest award possible for Squirrel Scouts, well done!

They’re now ready to move on to their next big adventure…Beavers!

Fun Fact
Red Squirrels can be found on Brownsea Island in Dorset, where the first Scout camp happened. That’s why the youngest section were named Squirrels.
